Medical tourism is also called healthcare tourism. Originally coined by travel agencies, the term has stuck. It refers to the traveling of people to other countries to seek medical healthcare facilities. It can also mean doctors traveling to other countries to provide healthcare services.

More then fifty countries have excellent medical facilities. These countries classify as medical tourism destinations. The quality and level of medical treatment varies from country to country. Certain destinations may not be suitable for international travelers.

In global healthcare, medical tourism is looked upon with disapproval. Especially when it comes to healthcare professionals traveling to other countries to perform healthcare services. This is because the quality of medical practice differs in every country. A doctor from on country might not live up to the expectations required for performing healthcare services on patients of another country.

Another flip-side of medical tourism is that healthcare professionals on training, or who are still studying practice in countries where there is a shortage of quality healthcare providers. In this context, healthcare professionals are seen as abusing the system of medical tourism.

Medical tourism has increased in recent times. India is a favorite medical tourism destination with patients from developing as well as developed countries. India is probably the only country that offers world-class healthcare at extremely affordable prices. Hence it is not surprising that people from the west come to India to heal themselves and not lose too much money in the bargain.

Medical tourism is conducted through medical tourism providers. These providers help with all travel arrangements.
